Mary Helen Lewis (Lumbee) is an 80-year-old retired Baltimore City Public Schools Paraeducator who still lives near the part of the city once known to Baltimore’s American Indian community as “the reservation.” Originally from Rowland, North Carolina, she grew up farming tobacco and cotton with her family. She moved to East Baltimore in the 1950s. Mary Helen helped to found the Baltimore American Indian Center and worked to fund it over the years by managing concession stands at Orioles baseball games. Today, she is one of the remaining “benchwarmers” on “Slim’s bench,” a seat in the neighborhood where Lumbee elders have gathered to socialize for decades. Mary Helen actively keeps in touch with other Lumbee people in North Carolina, continues to eat Lumbee foods, and attends a Lumbee church. She believes that in the next 20 years, there will be no more American Indian people in Baltimore, but hopes those who currently remain can keep the community together.
