Carl Dean Harding (Lumbee), age 79, is originally from Robeson County, North Carolina. He ran away from home at age 15 seeking work in Morehead City, where he learned to be a bricklayer. He eventually migrated to East Baltimore, following his trade. Carl quickly advanced to foreman and was able to hire other Lumbee workers. He estimates he has taught the trade to as many as 30 people in his lifetime.
Carl went on to own his own successful business, Pasadena Building Concepts, which specializes in masonry, concrete, and stone work. He resides in Pasadena, Maryland, where he enjoys fishing on the Magothy River. He predicts there won’t be an Indian community in Baltimore in 10 or 20 years, but hopes those who remain can hold onto the church. Carl advises young people to learn a trade, stay in school, and be the best they can be at whatever they can be, but cautions that there’s more to life than making a living.
