Linda Cox (Lumbee) is a 74-year-old clerk for the Circuit Court of Baltimore City who intends to retire in the next year. She resides in Upper Fells Point, in East Baltimore, at the heart of what was once known as “the reservation.” She has lived in the area for over 50 years. Linda remembers growing up on a farm in North Carolina, what hard work farming was, and her realization that she came from a family and a community without a lot of financial means.

She loves singing Southern gospel music and is a song leader at South Broadway Baptist Church, the Native American church where this interview was recorded. Linda emphasizes the importance of teaching American Indian children in Baltimore to be proud of who they are and to keep their culture alive so that South Broadway Baptist, the Baltimore American Indian Center, and the community will continue to strive.
