Jeanette Hunt (Lumbee), age 78, and Howard Redell Hunt (Lumbee), age 81, reside in Dundalk, Maryland. Redell was born in Lumberton, North Carolina, but lived in the Fairmont / Rowland area. Jeanette is from Shannon. Both migrated to East Baltimore with relatives as children and settled in the part of the city once known as “the reservation.”
Both are now retired—Redell from General Motors and Jeanette from Lever Brothers. In his early retirement, Redell was President (and cook) of the Native American Senior Citizens. He, Jeanette, and more relatives prepared lunch for elders of the community on a weekly basis until the Baltimore American Indian Center sold their building in 2017.
Redell enjoys betting on horses and playing the lottery every day at his neighborhood liquor store. Jeanette is part of the Red Hat Society. She likes to play bingo, shop at thrift stores, and tend to her yard. They believe Baltimore’s Indian community will be nonexistent in 20 years.
