Margaret Locklear Meiklejohn (Lumbee) is a 72-year-old retired clerical worker for the United States Naval Academy who now works part-time as a pet-sitter. She was born in Hamlet, North Carolina and moved to East Baltimore with her family when she was 4 years old. Margaret fondly recalls childhood visits to North Carolina and playing with other children there. She describes herself as a country girl living in the city. For fun, Margaret especially enjoys exercise. A current resident of Federal Hill in South Baltimore, she walks Ft. McHenry daily. She also likes to dress up, play Bingo, and visit a local senior center to dance and play games. Margaret enjoys helping elderly people. She feels the Native American community in Baltimore is fading and wishes there were more programs and offerings for Native people in the city, as there are in North Carolina. Margaret would like everyone to know that it is always possible to change yourself.
